How To Look After Your Pearls

How To Look After Your Pearls

Wear your pearls often

Many women today save their pearls for special occasions, but did you know that pearls should be worn regularly to help preserve their appearance and quality and improve their lustre.

Putting on and removing your pearls

Pearls should be the last thing you put on when you dress for an evening and the first thing you take off when you return home. Ideally pearls should be kept from chemicals, perfume, hairspray and make-up. When going out, put your make-up, perfume and hairspray on before you put your pearls on

Keep away from chemicals

Don’t wear your pearls whilst swimming or taking a bath or shower and it is not advisable to wear them whilst you are cleaning. They should be kept away from household detergents, as pearls are porous and absorb chemicals quite easily. Refrain from wearing pearls if you are wearing a Shetland wool jumper.

Cleaning your pearls

When it comes to cleaning your pearls, don’t place them in an ultrasonic cleansing device. There is no need to buy specialised jewellery cleaner for them. Simply wipe them with a soft damp cloth and allow to dry in the open air, If however, your pearls are particularly dirty use a very mild soap with water and pat them with a cotton towel before leaving them to dry in order to look radiant and maintain its lustre

Keep your pearls away from bright lights

Pearls shouldn’t be exposed to direct sunlight or near electric lightbulbs or kept in very dry areas as this may cause them to crack. Having a damp cloth close by to the pearls are stored can help, as moisture helps them.

Storing your pearls

Store your Pearls separately from your other jewellery to avoid your pearls getting scratched, ensure they are not in a plastic bag or air tight container, but rather in a soft or satin lined pouch or box or even wrapped in tissue paper or chamois cloth.
