First communion is a tradition in the Catholic Church for children between the ages of 7 and 12 to receive their first sacrament of the Holy Eucharist after being baptised in the name of the Holy Trinity which is God, the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. This is an important step into the Catholic religion. Gifts including Rosaries, prayer cards, cross necklaces, crucifix necklaces, bibles are usually given as gifts to the person receiving their First Communion and the girls normally wear white to signify purity. Protestants also have communion, and call it the Eucharist. The Eucharist has been known to be ‘symbolic’ in the remembrance of Jesus Christ’s last supper, where he broke the bread and shared it amongst his disciples and shared wine and asked them to do this in remembrance of him. The bread represented his body and the wine represented his blood, he was then betrayed by one of his disciples after that last meal and crucified on a cross.
Christians, both Catholic and non-Catholic believe that he sacrificed himself so that the sins of all men would be forgiven. On the third day after the crucifixion took place, he arose from the dead and after appearing to his disciples he ascended to heaven to be with his father, God. We still celebrate this occasion today as Easter.
This is how Christianity began and why many Christians, including Catholics wear a crucifix necklace or a cross necklace to show their faith or as a gift of love, which is what Christ taught.
